Tech Review: Blinkist

When you run a small business, time is money!

There’s plenty of new technology and apps coming out everyday that help to distract us and keep us mindlessly entertained.  From Snake on your old Nokia to Crazy Birds on your iphone.  Blinkist is not one of them.

Blinkist promises to give you ‘access to key insights from 2000+ bestselling nonfiction books, transformed into powerful packs you can read or listen to in just 15 minutes’.  In short, it’s an app you can download on your smartphone that will give you a short summary of popular non-fiction books.  These easily digestible summaries give you the bones and key lessons from each book.

We love this app for a couple of key reasons:

  • The hard work of summarising great books is done for you.  You can absorb valuable lessons and practical information anytime you have 15 minutes to spare.
  • You can download the app for free and get a new book summarised for you each day.  If you want more, you can subscribe for around $5.00 per month.
  • It can help you form good habits.  If you’re on the train or stuck somewhere, instead of reaching for your smartphone and logging on to Facebook, feed your brain some valuable lessons.
  • It’s a great intro to books that you’ve been meaning to read.  When you find a summary of a book that piques your interest, jump on Amazon and buy the full version.

Whilst it won’t replace the value of immersing yourself in a book and truly absorbing the information – I do think it’s a great way to introduce yourself to hundreds of great books that have shaped the lives of others and and helped build businesses.
